Dr. Johan Galtung is widely considered to be the “Father” of peace and conflict research. He founded the PRIO-International Peace Research Institute in Oslo, Norway in 1959, one of the first research institutes devoted to the field of peace studies. He has also worked as a consultant for many international organizations, including the United Nations, participating as a mediator in over 40 conflicts around the world, most recently in Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.
A native of Norway and the author of numerous books and articles on peace and conflict, Dr. Galtung has been a lecturer and professor at a number of leading universities, including the University of Oslo, Princeton University, Columbia University, and the University of Hawaii, where he is currently a Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies. He is also the founder and director of Transcend, an international research center devoted to the study of peace and conflict.
